Moving with a Pet? Here's What You Need to Know

If you are moving a long distance with your pets, they will have to go through a transition period just like you. They won't understand what is going on, which may cause them to act out. Purchasing a pet travel insurance policy is a good way to protect yourself from any liability if your dog or cat (or other pets) should have difficulties during their travel time.

Maintain a Normal Routine

Note that your pets follow a routine just like you do. Upsetting their routine can be very distressing to them. They may lash out or act out of character, especially if they are around people they don't know. So, if you want to keep them calm during the move, you need to maintain their routine as much as possible.

Do a Trial Run

If part of your move will be by car, take your pet on a short trial run. Some may actually enjoy the ride. For those that don't, you will know what to expect if they begin to act out. If your pet has a favorite toy or piece of bedding, make sure to take it with you. Having something they are familiar with can be very comforting.

Know the Rules for Flying with a Pet

Most airlines have rules and regulations that you must follow if you plan on traveling with your pet. Before you book your flight, look into the rules for the airline that you plan to use. If you have questions, make sure to get answers before you book your flight.

Hire a Professional

If you aren't sure if you can handle your pet on a long trip, you can always hire a professional pet moving company. They have all the necessary equipment needed to successfully transport your pet, keeping them safe and secure at all times. The right professional will be able to move your pet successfully without any unwanted incident.

Look into Pet Travel Insurance

If you have never traveled with your pet before, you may want to purchase pet travel insurance. This policy will protect you and your pet if they get out of control or are lost in a large area. A pet travel insurance policy will protect you against any liability claims if your pet runs loose and harms others or damages their property.

Pet-proof Your Home

Once you arrive at your new home, you will need to pet-proof it. Make sure your doors and windows are secure. Examine your fence to ensure there are no broken boards or loose gate latches. Put gates near the stairways if you have a puppy or kittens who have never been around stairs before.

Allow Your Pet to Get Settled In

Give your pet some time to get settled in. Let them roam through the house as you firmly let them know where they are allowed to go and where they are not. Give them a small designated area that they can call their own. They will be just as curious about their new surroundings as you are.

Whether you are moving across town or across the country, your pet will have some adjusting to do, especially while they are traveling.
